West German Mug - Flea Find

My west German mug-dar spotted this 1960s flower mug a mile away at the vide yesterday. I practically fell over the girls possessions in order to claim it !

I just want to look at it, and look at it and look at it again and again because it takes me to dreamy mug land where all the mugs are as beautiful as this ..........

Danish Ladies - By Modflowers

When I was asked to write a guest blog post, after I'd finished smiling and congratulating myself, I admit; I inwardly panicked. Just a little.

After all, where was I going to find something to write about as nice as the vintage loveliness that appears on Pomme de Jour?

But then, sitting in my living room, I found the answer was staring me in the face. Literally. From up on my mantlepiece.
A couple of my favourite ladies. Perfect to share with friends of a vintage persuasion.

I bought these candlesticks a few years ago from online vintage emporium Winters Moon. When I saw them first, when browsing late one night, I virtually ran to get my purse out. I was even more delighted when her cousin appeared a couple of weeks later.

They were described as Danish ladies. I have been able to find out nothing more about them. You can imagine what sorts of things the interweb offers if you search for information about Danish ladies...
Made of papier mache, my Danish ladies are hollow, lightweight and two-faced. But not in a bad way. They each have one face on the front and one on the back of their heads. I wonder if they are supposed to be looking both forward and backward in time?

The faces remind me of Bjorn Wiinblad's pictures. Their expressions are almost innocent - and unfathomable. They are allowed to hold candles only at Christmas. Just in case they get carried away and scorch their lovely heads.  After all, you do have to watch these enigmatic types.

Vintage photo envelope

I found this on my recent travels at the bottom of a box and just had to have it.  I fell in love with the illustrations and the idea that photos had been picked up from the shop in this pretty little envelope. In fact there are still some negatives inside.

Crinkled but much loved

I just knew I could use the idea for something et voila !

Soup Tuesday On A Wednesday - British Onion Soup

British onion soup recipe
Ok so I know it's wednesday but I didn't have time yesterday. Every tuesday chez moi (time permitting) my friend Christine and I have a bowl of soup together.  It's a chance to catch up and for me to try a new soup recipe or simply eat an old favourite.

With a brown bread baguette.

In my house I am the 'Reine of soups', I adore making them and the girls eating them. I shall try and keep up the 'Soup Tuesday' posts with photos and recipes. This take on the French onion soup uses cider instead of cognac and white wine. Perfect for vegetarians if you use a veggie stock instead of chicken, have a go, it's delicious !

Mama Bea Makes Special - Missy

Pomme de Jour - Mousse Au Chocolat

Mousse au chocolat served in vintage china found at flea markets.

So the girls are back and my mummy/cooking head is firmly back in place after 2 weeks of eating out and barely going near a kitchen.  Last night I made their favourtite mousse au chocolat but changed the milk chocolate for white. This is the easiest recipe ever and if you feel inclined you can use the remaining  egg yolks to make a homemade mayonnaise, super yummy with chips.

Pomme de Jour Featured Seller - Little Sally Waters

Introducing Sally Waters the first Pomme de Jour featured seller who regularly uses our vintage fabrics in her beautiful creations.

Sally at work on her gorgeous stall.

I live in Kenton, a small village outside of Exeter in Devon, having grown up on the outskirts of London. I am loving my rural life and it's proving a great place to bring up my pigeon pair - george 4 and Abigial 7. We regularly visit our folks in London, then come to home to our cottage with chicken friends. There's something about the city though that makes you feel so alive. I enjoy the contrast in pace.

Shoulder Tote made from vintage Dekoplus fabric.

I was given a cantilever sewing box and a 'Petite' sewing machine for my 7th birthday and have been sewing ever since. My Nan taught me to knit whilst I was at infant school. I've always had a needlework project, or three, on the go and I remember my childhood creativity being praised and encouraged by my Mum who couldn't sew for toffee but was a knitter.

Flower power cushion cover

After uni, I spent my career before motherhood in retail visual merchandising, spending a dozen years working for Laura Ashley, endlessly combining print and colour. At this point my fabric stash began to grow and I began to sew for my own home, friends and family - curtains, cushions and the like. I started to collect vintage fabrics which has led to my passion for midcentury print. The design and colouration of the 50's was so uplifting. I like it to feature in my home - it makes it a happy space. I particularly collect vintage cowboy prints, inspired by my boy!

Peg clothespin bags

'Little Sally Waters' is an Andrews sisters song title from the '50s. It seemed apt to use it for my business as I share the name, love the era and all of my goodies are made by little ol' me. I started to sell on Etsy and Folksy last year and I stallhold at some local vintage events and quality craft fairs. I have just started to take wholesale orders for some of my gifts which is a new adventure. I love the perpetual textile treasure hunt -never knowing what you will find next, or where. I love to see the nostalgia creep over my customers faces at fairs and hear their stories of where they have seen the fabrics in the past.

Staying true to what I love keeps the making fresh and exciting and will hopefully inspire others - my little girl asked Father Christmas for a sewing machine last year, and of course he obliged!
